The ARCP takes place in February to April each year. The timing is such that trainees have had enough time at the units to develop an impression of the place at which they are working, but it also allows enough time for trainees that are struggling a little to get the help that they may need.
You should receive individual emails with the date, time and location of your ARCP. Please contact the deanery if you do not hear anything by the end of January.
In order to 'pass' the ARCP, the committee will assess the trainees' record of training/eportfolio. Evidence from the previous post and the current post will be looked at, and the requirements stated below will need to be met. If not, trainees may not be allowed to progress. The training committee will be much more strict in enforcing these regulations; those that turn up to their ARCP/RITA without the necessary paperwork will be turned away, and the Clinical Director at their units informed.
Clinical competencies - these need to be recorded throughout training, and it should be the aim of the trainee to have these completed before their PYA.
Multi-source feedback - the committee expect an MSF to be completed in every post (that lasts 6 months or longer)
Multiple Consultant Report - this will be implemented in the near future - click here for more details.
An anonymised record of procedures (native and transplant renal biopsies, tunnelled dialysis access) performed during training may be asked for at the ARCP.
Clinical Audit - an audit is expected annually.
ALS certificates (within 4 years) should be up to date.
A form R should also be completed prior to attending the ARCP.
*although training in procedures is competency-based, it is advisable for all trainees to keep a logbook of all their procedures (native/transplant biopsies and tunnelled dialysis catheter insertion)
PYA
The penultimate year assessment is unique to physician training and is an arrangement that involves a meeting between a representative of the SAC for your specialty external to your deanery. It should take place 12-18 months prior to completion of training in which trainee progress is reviewed against that curriculum so far. The PYA will then identify outstanding targets to ensure the requirements of the curriculum are met in full. If you are dual accrediting you will have a PYA for both. More information can be found on the JRCPTB website.
