Title: Understanding marine animal movement by biologging

Where do wild animals go? Why, and how do they move? Answering these questions is increasingly important, as climate change and increasing human impacts (e.g., urbanization and overfishing) are altering animal movement patterns and distributions. In this seminar, I will show how the recent advance of electronic tags (e.g., animal-borne video cameras, accelerometers, and satellite transmitters), the technique called biologging, can contribute to this field. As examples, I will present some of my recent work on (i) underwater foraging behavior of Adelie penguins, (ii) the swimming biomechanics of hammerhead sharks, (iii) a global analysis of bird migration, and (iv) the swimming speed and migration patterns of “warm-blooded” fishes. These examples demonstrate how ecology (why they move?), biomechanics (how they move?), and physiology (internal states of the animals) are interrelated in determining complex animal movement patterns.
