JPS 2021March

The Physical society of Japan March meeting 2021 started 2021.03.13 via online. Online conference is very convenient. You can listen to any talk you want from your desk with a cup of coffee, and you don't need to walk around with heavy stuff to change the session to attend.

For my memo:

Yoshizawa-san's Bloch wave interference outside the 1t BZ was very interesting. He observed the interference wave on Si(111)r7xr3-In using STS, and analyzed the data carefully mapping on the reciprocal space. Then, he found patterns outside 1st BZ. To explain the pattern, he did the first principle calculation using Quantum expresso, and proved that the lattice periodic modulation part u_{k+G}(r) of the Bloch wave is responsible to the interference pattern outside the 1st BZ. Yoshizawa-san took out the u_{k+G}(r) components from Quantum expresso. The work was published in Nat. Comm.

Penetration of electric field to metal film from K. Kobayashi-san's group. They experimentally determined the penetration depth of the electric field to a metal film. (I forgot the material.) The length was determined to be 4 \AA. It is quite large compared with the conventionally believed value (0.5\AA -1\AA). But because the procedure to get the the conventional value (ex. Moench) is a very rough estimate, newly determined experimental value sounds reliable. An atomistic view including atomic structure, electronics structure, and DOS is necessary for further discussion. The experimental method they developed is very interesting.
