Pull up a stool. Although it is made of cardboard, it is designed to hold your weight.
Structural Team Challenge: The students began working in groups of two, problem solving how to build strong structures using single ply cardboard. Each team had the same limitations, such as using a 18" x 24" sheet of cardboard, the structure needed to be 12" high, and have enough top surface area to place 9"x 12" flat weight on top. Also, the structure needed to be completed before the end of class. Students worked inside and outside, and it was a fun learning experience. Then, the next day, each structure was given the weight test and the students shared their work.
After the structural team challenge, each student individually applied what they had learned when drawing multiple stool designs. Then, they made their own 1/2 scale stool model before forming into teams of two.
