Project Objectives:
As a team, create a 3D animal sculpture using junk, bottle caps or found objects. The sculpture should express interest through the intentional organization of it parts, rather than being viewed as a display of random chaos. The animal must be able to stand on its own or stay upright with the use a display stand. Learn how professional artists upcycle materials to create beautiful art.
Students formed teams, then began hunting for "cool stuff" from Mrs. Fennelly's wooden crate. Then they began the design process. A couple of students were given permission to work independently.
So many different design concepts were explored. The students experienced the design process as they explored ideas, created, made changes, and finalized their upcycled masterpieces.
Final Designs:
Kai, a seventh grade student, redesigned the armadillo seen in the above, left photograph, during Thanksgiving break. The new wire and aluminum pull tab sculpture, titled Armordillo, was entered into the Scholastic Art Award competition. It won a National Gold Medal, a Gold Key and was also chosen to be shown in the Denver Art Museum top 100 exhibit.
In June, Armordillo will be on display at The Parsons School of Design, in New York City, during the Nationals Ceremony.
A Big Congratulations to Kai!!!
