COMMUNITY WORK

At the start of each year, the Sauble Sandpipers sit down and decide on our fundraising initiatives for the coming year. We are so lucky to have a membership that thrives on both fun and hard work. Giving back to our community is very important to our group and we have just held our 5th annual New Year's Eve Gala to raise funds for "Caring for Cancer" and other charitable donations. We have donated 2,500 head coverings for cancer patients via the Oncology Department at the Owen Sound Hospital in the past 5 years and over 152 "Comfort Quilts" to friends and neighbours undergoing chemotherapy.

As 2012 came to a close, the Sandpipers were able to donate over $5,510.00 in our community. The Bruce Peninsula Hospice Association is a wonderful organization that continues to receive our support on an annual basis. We also feel strongly about assisting the Salvation Army in their endeavours each year and made donations to both the Food Bank and the Christmas Hamper programs.

School Breakfast Clubs are dear to our hearts, so this year we made a contribution to the schools in Amabel Sauble, Hepworth and Wiarton to show our support. The Firefighter's Toy Drive is an important initiative at "the Beach" and one we choose to support each year. Good job Firefighters!

Seniors play a vital role in the Sandpiper organization and in our community. Throughout the year the Hepworth Shallow Lake Legion, Sauble Lawn Bowling Club and Alzheimer's Society received contributions from the Sandpipers as did various organization when we lost one of our members.

Our Club is almost 300 members strong with residents from Wiarton, Hepworth, Oliphant, Red Bay, Sauble and Owen Sound. We're an active, vital and caring group trying to live life to the fullest and having a great time doing so. We're proud of our accomplishments and very humbled by the many businesses, individuals and groups from Sauble and surrounding communities are so very generous in giving us door prizes, silent auction items and so many in-kind donations. We must make special mention of the Sunset Cruisers who, for the past four years, have given the Sandpipers the opportunity of running a Share the Wealth Draw on the Beach on Tuesday nights in conjunction with their classic car show. This has been very viable financially for us and we are truly grateful for the chance to "pass it on."
