In the days following the earthquake, the members of the Sasebo Chapter did what we could to help. One member traveled north to Sendai to volunteer. Others sent a number of packages to Kesunuma, one of the hardest hit areas, and collected packages donated by DAR members and chapters and sent them north with American School relief volunteers.
In the midst of all this, we were looking for a specific group we could assist. We heard about a kindergarten/nursery school – the Taro Hoikuen – which was washed away by the tsunami, along with everything inside. They were then holding classes at a hotel in Miyako, but had no supplies or toys at all.
When asked, the encho-sensei (principal) suggested that they would be very grateful for a set of large, colorful blocks for the children. Thanks to the generous support of our associate members, the Sasebo Chapter was able to purchase the blocks.
