The Sasebo Chapter is supporting an initiative to assist teenagers in foster care in Japan.
A student at an international school in Tokyo is helping students in a foster home in Chofu City, Tokyo, who will have to leave the home as soon as they graduate high school in March 2019. The project is called Sudachi and she is working to assist these students with their transition.
The government gives the graduates some money when they leave, but it is not enough for the necessary deposit, key money and insurance for a studio apartment. Renting an apartment in Japan also means purchasing light fixtures, appliances, furniture, kitchenware, computers, etc. Nothing is included. Without a place to stay, or family support, most students will be forced to find a job immediately, and therefore, will not be able to attend university.
Volunteers with the Sudachi project are helping by collecting used appliances and furniture, but money is also very much needed for rental deposits, key money, storage for donated furniture, truck rental, etc. The Sasebo chapter has donated to this project and hopes to do more in the future.
