Mid-autumn festival is another important festive season for many chinese families. Gathering together with family members, playing with candles, having mooncake together and taking a walk with lanterns at the park together.
For this important season, we have planned together with the Lions West Club to celebrate it with the elderly.
The session started with lantern making. We guided the elderly on how to set up their own lanterns and gave them markers to decorate their lanterns. We could see that some of them had artistic talents that we did not know of before and they could decorate the lanterns very nicely. On the other hand, some elderly do not enjoy this activity and did not want to participate in it. After engaging with them, we found out that it was actually because they felt inferior and think that they could not draw well which would make the lantern very ugly. In this case, we tried to encourage them and told them it does not matter what they draw on it, it could be writing words like " 中秋节快乐". However, some of the elderly really did not want to draw. Thus, the volunteers would help them in the drawings so that they could at least bring the lanterns home to hang in their house.
We also got to try to make our own muah-chee for ourselves and the elderly to eat. Of course, not missing out the mooncakes as well.
The elderly went home with a full stomach from the delicious muah-chee and mooncakes while bringing home their packed lunches and nicely decorated lanterns.
