September 30th cont.
We arrived in Kos where there were even more nasty English people. Also 'All day breakfasts' galore - I had a pork doner kebab myself (I'd had no pork for nearly six weeks at this point) and booked the ferry to Phiraeus on the Greek mainland for that night. I spent an hour or so rebuilding 'barb.
We had a very dull day killing time until the 8pm departure but eventually the mega ferry arrived, on which Rhubarb could positively stretch his legs and we drove on. A double decker, double width monster boat it was. Some food, drinks and slept.
October 1st
We got woken up by the ships voice telling us to get up, go to our car and get off at about 7am. When we drove off the boat we were pleasantly surprised that POS our GPS had decided that he was going to work properly. Never before seen levels of accuracy and workingness had ever been seen. This was a GPS that didn't work in village Cape Town but navigated us flawlessly out of Athens to Patras - another port town a few hundred km's away. There we had a bit of luck. We'd been planning to stay in Patras until midnight before taking a two day ferry to Venice and arriving Saturday morning but there was a boat leaving at 14:30 for Ancona, Italy a few hundred k's south of Venice but arriving Friday morning.
We hopped on it. A word on these boats - they really aren't too horrible. The cabins are all right windowless cells, but the food and drinks are alright. There's good fast wifi and BBC World News on TV. They beat most hotels I've stayed in on the trip.
We went to bed.
