2013 Reno Chess Club Championship Rules

2013 RENO CHESS CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP RULES: Introduction— The following stricter rules are necessary because of the recent large increase of missed and postponed games. The postponed games appear to be steadily increasing over the last few years. This club does not want to dissolve the relaxed atmosphere of playing our games, but we have to draw the line somewhere.

We understand that our players have another life and "stuff happens," but at the same time a scheduled game has an opponent who is anxious to play it on a timeline, and to miss a game throws his schedule off as well — not to mention the entire tournament schedule.

Even if you forfeit a game, you are still in the match IF you have contacted your opponent (or called the chess club) AND the TD Jerry Weikel. All we are asking is that you communicate with your opponents and the TD, plus it's the right thing to do. COMMUNICATION IS IMPERATIVE FOR EVERYONE involved. Thank you.

Contact: Reno Chess Club 827-3864 or TD Jerry Weikel 354-8728

1) Time controls — Primary: First 30 moves in 90 minutes. Secondary: Sudden Death in 60 minutes. A 5-second time delay is required.

2) Equipment — Sets are provided by chess club. Personal sets are OK if approved by both players. Black has choice of clocks, but if Black is late to the game, then White may set up a clock.

a) Clocks will be started at 7:05 p.m. on Thursdays, and if played on Sundays, 6:05 p.m. or starting time may be changed if agreed to by both players and TD.

I) Schedule — Games shall be played according to the schedule, with no postponements, unless agreed to by TD.

a) Any exception to the no-postponement rule MUST be approved by TD (Jerry Weikel, 354-8728) and will usually be acceptable only if it is job-related, involves a major illness, such as the flu with a doctor's excuse (not, for example, a cold or a painful little toe!), and should be requested at least 48 hours before game time.

b) If a player has a game he cannot make, he must bring it up BEFORE THE MATCH STARTS AND the excuse must still be approved by TD (Jerry Weikel).

c) All players have a responsibility to their respective opponents and to the Reno Chess Club. If you are missing a game (because of one of the aforementioned reasons), you are obligated to phone your opponent AND the TD (Jerry Weikel, 354-8728) as soon as you can.

d) Failure to contact your opponent and the TD could result in forfeiture of the match; for example, a "no call, no show" will not be accepted.

e) A player has the option to play up one class if he has been previously rated in that class. For example, a player whose rating has slipped to Class B from Class A can choose to play up in Class A since he has a previous rating in that class.

II) a) The 2013 Reno Chess Club Championship Qualifier will be held beginning Jan. 10. (Jan. 3 is last day to sign up.) This year will be divided into three groups: A, B and C, using the USCF January Supplement. These ratings will be used throughout the club championships. The top two from each section will advance to the 2013 Reno Chess Club Championship Matches, along with two other players, based on the most total points (Tied ratings will be broken by highest players' ever-achieved rating.) .

b) Ties for seed number will be broken by — No. 1 head -to-head results. No. 2: The highest-seed number that each player defeated. No. 3: If still tied, the highest-seed number that each player drew. No. 4: If still tied the highest seed number that each player defeated with the Black pieces. No. 5: If still tied, highest-seed number that each player drew with the Black pieces. No. 6: Two-game Blitz match until tie is broken.

c) Club championship matches

1) Group A No. 4 finisher (A4) will play a two-game match vs. "B4" for No. 8 seed. (These two players must be available to play two times a week or forfeit match.) Time control for this match is: 30/90, SD/60 (first two games). If tied, there will be a pair of dual-rated G/60s games on a Sunday. If still tied, two more G/60s will be played on the following Thursday. If still tied, up to four G/30s will be played the following Sunday.

2) Rounds number 1 and No. 2 pairings (four-game match). No. 1 vs No. 8, winner to play winner of A2 vs. B2. No. A1 vs. B3, winner to play winner of B1 vs. A3. Round 3: The two remaining players will play a six-game match for the Reno Chess Club Championship.

3) IF a match is tied:

a) Colors are to be alternated from the previous game.

b) Players shall play (at least) 2 days per week until the tie is broken (preferable Thursday and Sunday).

c) There shall be no postponements, unless there is an emergency situation, aforementioned above, with the situation approved by TD (Jerry Weikel). If a player cannot play two games per week, he shall be forfeited.

d) A tie will be considered broken if the score is different after any 2-game series.

e) If match is still tied after four games, the rest of the games shall be played Game in 30 minutes (not USCF rated) until tie is broken.

4) All matters not covered by these rules will be decided by the judgment of the TD (Jerry Weikel). The decision of the TD (Jerry Weikel) IS FINAL.
