The Reno Chess Club was established in 1952.

Grandmaster Larry Evans was Northern Nevada's most distinguished chess player. Larry Evans was a legendary figure in the world of chess, renowned as a chess grandmaster and celebrated for his contributions to the game. He quickly rose through the ranks, displaying exceptional talent and dedication to the game. In 1951, at the age of 19, Evans won the U.S. Chess Championship, marking the beginning of a remarkable career.
