Our Kevin Chung went 6-0 and won a fine trophy plus $850.00 in the Reserve Section.
Aastik Grover went 3.5/2.5 with a win and draw against 2 experts in the Open section. David Cowles and Fred Roscher went 3-3 in the Senior Reserve section.

A New Champion Is Crowned
The Reno Chess Club is pleased to announce that Yajur J Chandar has been crowned the 2025 Reno Chess Club Champion following a decisive victory in the championship match. In a closely contested six-game series against formidable opponents, including previous club champions, Chandar demonstrated remarkable resilience and tactical prowess.
After falling behind with a loss in Game 3, Chandar mounted an impressive comeback, securing victories in Games 5 and 6 to claim the championship with a final score of 3.5-2.5. His performance throughout the match showcased the strategic depth and competitive spirit that has characterized his chess development.
If he so desires, there is no doubt this man can earn a Master title . . . or more.

Aastik Grover won the Nevada Middle School Championship after competing in the Northern Nevada qualifier and the online finals between the North and South. He will represent Nevada in the Dewain Barber National Tournament of Middle School State Champions in Wisconsin this summer. The winner of the Barber will qualify for the US Cadet Championship (Link to the finished 2025 event - see the names of future chess stars) and the World Youth Championship! Good luck Aastik! All of Nevada will be rooting for you!
Northern Nevada Championship: Congratulations to Northern Nevada Champion Daniil Fedunov!
The Reno Chess Club had TWO teams this year: the Pale Riders, consisting of Bruce Gold (Captain), Aastik Grover, Kevin Chung, and Chris Richard; and the Reno Goldfish consisting of Jason Thoel (Captain), Ken Falconer, Fred Roscher, and Eli Kaufman. Eli was the top scorer from Reno with 5/6 and Kevin Chung was second with 4.5/6. The tournament was organized by Bay Area Chess and played in Milpitas, California February 15-17.

Amateur Team West - Reno Gold Fish won the U1600 team championship with a score of 5.5/6! Each team member won a DGT chess clock and a medal. Kevin Chung came in 2nd place on Board 1 with a score of 5.0/6.0. Chris Richard scored 2.0/6.0 on board 2. Fred Roscher came in 4th place on board 3 with a score of 4.0/6.0. On board 4, Eli Kaufman scored 3.5/6.0. Well done team, and thank you for representing the Reno Chess Club!

Club Qualifier Swiss - The Club Qualifier Tournament continued last night with round 5. Results have been updated. Final Round (Round 6) provisional pairings have also been posted.
Amateur Team West - Good luck and safe travels to our members on their way to compete in this years Amateur Team West tournament in Milpitas, CA. Check out our Away Tournaments page to see a list of tournaments that our members are traveling out of town for.
Sunday Rapids - There is no planned rapids for Sunday, February 18th. The next scheduled round is February 25th. Don't forget to check our calendar to keep up with the schedule.
Reno Chess Club Google Group - The Reno Chess Club will be setting up a Google Group. This will act as an e-mailing list and enable the RCC Board to send out information regarding tournaments and last-minute updates as needed. You do not need to have a Google/Gmail account; any e-mail address will work to receive communications.

January 19, 2024: Club Qualifier Swiss
The Club Qualifier Tournament started last night with 43 players! Round 1 Results have been updated and posted to the tournament page. Additionally, Round 2 Provisional Pairings have been posted. As a reminder, provisional pairings may differ drastically when official pairings are completed.
January 18, 2024: Club Qualifier Swiss Starts Tonight!
The Club Qualifier Tournament starts January 18th and runs to February 22nd. This is a 6 round swiss tournament with an entry fee of $40. This fee covers the subsequent Club rounds or Class rounds that follow this tournament. Please have any dues (entry fee, club membership) ready to pay to Kevin Chung, Treasurer.
