Everyone act casual: Fridays are Casual Night at the Reno Chess Club!
On Friday, March 27, the Reno Chess Club will be open starting from 6:00pm until about 9:30pm for casual games.
Rummaging through our archives, Jason Thoel, AKA He Who Should Probably Not Be Named, found the ancient document you see to your left.
We are proud to discover our history in a more precise form than we used to know it: Until Mr. Thoel found these Minutes of the first meeting of the Reno Chess Club, held in the Hearing Room of the State Library Building on January 21, 1936.
The Trowell Club was kind enough to offer a room for $15 a month, or $350 in 2026 US dollars, a fairly steep price for enjoying the use of a room once weekly.
19 years later, Mr. Wm. F. Taber won the 1955 Idaho Open with a score of 6.5/8, ahead of such players as Mrs. Piatigorsky - please see another ancient document, the Washington Chess Letter. Fans of chess history will remember the Piatigorsky Cup events from the 1960's.
Happy birthday, Reno Chess Club!
