Dating back to the 13th century, the Dolder Tower is part of the original fortifications of Riquewihr. This tower served as a belfry and watchtower during the olden days, and it’s the town’s most iconic monument.
The Dolder Tower houses a museum where you can learn more about Riquewihr’s history from the 12th to the 17th century. You will find plenty of artefacts here, and once you reach the tower’s upper floors, you will have a beautiful view of the surroundings.
The French Alsace region is famous for its beautiful half-timbered houses, and this is what I loved the most about Riquewihr.
You will find houses of nearly every colour here, after all, this is one of the most colourful places in France. If you’re visiting this village around Christmas (which is what I did), they will be decorated with beautiful ornaments.
Rue du Général-de-Gaulle is Riquewihr’s main street and the houses here are stunning. Make sure to explore the rest of the village too, though, as it’s full of little streets and alleys that will make you feel as if you’re walking through a fairytale.
Some of the most notable buildings in Riquewihr are:
The Skyscraper (14 rue du Général-de-Gaulle): As its name predicts, this is one of the tallest half-timbered houses in Riquewihr.
A l’Etoile (42 rue du Général-de-Gaulle): This Baroque-style house has one of the most ornately decorated facades in town.
The Dissler House (6 rue de la Couronne): Built at the beginning of the 17th century, this wealthy home is argued to be one of the finest houses in Riquewihr.
Located on a charming little square, the Tour des Voleurs was built in 1291. Back in the day, this was the place where criminals were interrogated and imprisoned.
Today, the Thieves’ Tower houses a museum where you can visit the torture chamber and guardroom. Unfortunately, it was closed when I visited Riquewihr, so it’s something I will have to go back for.
A visit to the Tour des Voleurs can be combined with the Maison du Vigneron, which dates back to the 16th century. Here, you will get to see how Riquewihr’s winemakers lived and worked.

Any visit to Reims includes the Notre-Dame cathedral. Its beauty is unanimous. And for good reason, it is an architectural jewel inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
Larger than Notre-Dame de Paris, it also presents an exceptional statuary. 2,303 sculpted figures adorn its facades. Biblical scenes, a gallery of kings, a bestiary, gargoyles, so many stories to tell for the guides who make you discover it.
How to talk about Reims without mentioning the most prestigious wine in the world, champagne. A symbol of celebration, success and sharing, champagne is omnipresent in Reims.
From the cellars of the great houses to the vineyards of the Montagne de Reims, live a unique experience to discover champagne. Discover the secrets of its history, its elaboration and taste the pleasure of its tasting
When the kings of France went to Reims for their coronation, they stayed there for several days. It was in the Tau Palace, the archbishop’s residence located next to the cathedral, that they settled. It is also where the post-consecration festivities were celebrated.
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991, the palace now houses an exceptional museum whose collections trace the history of the cathedral and the royal coronations.
The old Saint-Remi abbey, also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is composed of 2 sites to visit: the basilica and the historical museum. Both are worth a visit, about 20 minutes walk from the cathedral. Several bus lines also allow you to get there in less than 5 minutes.
The basilica is sumptuous. Its interior, mixing Gothic and Romanesque styles, is full of spirituality.
The museum, whose rich collections are installed in different rooms of the Benedictine abbey, traces the history of Man from prehistory to the Renaissance.
