For the first week, go to Morningside to sit with the attendings - learn basic anatomy and US overview.
For the 2nd-4th weeks of US, go to Morningside and focus on performing scans, especially to complete the US credentialing form (see bottom of this page for the form, or link here).
Ask US technicians for guidance!
Become familiar with machines at all sites, and master US knobology & anatomy.
Review all personally scanned cases with US attending and dictate all studies that you perform (at a minimum).
Dictate additional US studies at assigned site, once you are fully credentialed in US scanning. (instructions for Credentialing are below)
US M (R2 - R4)
Cover the US phones (#23-4245) and also chat with the technicians as they come in to verify studies.
Read all M and KH ultrasound examinations on the worklist.
Read West and Brodsky studies as time permits and review with the scheduled West attending
Learn advanced scanning techniques when attendings go to scan a patient.
As time permits, save cases and teach R1 any interesting cases from the day
All residents are required to become internally credentialed to perform emergent ultrasound examinations, should they be needed while on call. R1 residents will therefore focus primarily on scanning when on dedicated US rotations and will complete the Credentialing Form.
All cases performed during credentialing should be reviewed and signed by the scheduled attending.
The Credentialing Form should be turned in by the end of your US scanning rotation, but deadline is 3/1 in each academic year and will need to be signed by the Program Director.
We would also recommend practicing as many upper extremity DVT and renal studies as possible, as they occasionally come up on call. Ask an US Attending to review your studies and sign off on your credential sheet. You are also to dictate the studies you perform.
Lower and upper extremity DVT (10)
Limited Gallbladder or Abdomen (10)
Female Pelvic (10)
Pediatric Abdomen: Appendicitis or Intussusception (10)
Testicular torsion (5)
