Blood and Body Fluid Exposure (BBFE)

If there is a BBFE, try to remain calm.

  1. Sharps injury: Wash the area with soap and water

  2. Mucous membranes: Flush mucous membranes with water only

  3. Incident report: Report to your supervisor, who will help fill out an incident report

  4. Report: Report to EHS (regular hours) or ED (after hours) immediately

  5. Tests: The source patient should have lab tests sent for HBG, HCV and HIV

  6. Consent: If the source patient is unable to give consent, anonymous HIV testing may be available under certain circumstances. Please refer to the Employee Health policy on BBFE
