“I am the body”, “I am the soul” implies 'I' is not one, but two. When focus falls upon the body, there is "I am the Body", and there is "I am the Soul" when the focus goes towards the soul. "Bodily I" is false and inconsistent with truth because the "Bodily I" dies. The immortal is referred to as 'Prana Chaitanya' (Consciousness of Soul) or the "Soul I". This 'I' never dies. Soul or 'Atma' is called consciousness. Soul is 'Paramatma Chaitanya' (Consciousness of God) and in the words of Yogis - it is referred to as 'Maha Prana' (Higher Soul).
If we want to lead a righteous life without being affected by the pain and suffering of the manifested world, we should cling to the one thing that matters: hold on to 'Prana Chaitanya’, the sense of being, our ’I’ or 'Atma'. Where is 'I' when there is no 'Prana' in Body? Without Prana, the body would not last a second. It will lie lifeless as the Soul won’t be there. 'Prana' is that Soul. Our existence is only the existence of 'Prana'. The soul resides in all living being as breath 'Sash'. As we are fully occupied till our longevity or life span, likewise a Lifespan is fully occupied with 'Vayu' (air). The main root or essence of the air/Vayu which resides inside our body is breath. Liveliness/soul of all living being is breath, 'Prana Vayu'. Till He (Prana) is there in the body, the body, I and the consciousness is there. The moment He leaves I am no more. So the consciousness is Breathing, pure and clean breathing means pure consciousness. This breathing does not get spoiled or rot in water, never get dirty in mud, no weapons can cut through it, even fire can't burn it. He is the soul. He is my 'Prana Vayu'. A point is to be noted- the air outside what we see is not 'Prana Vayu'. Because if the outside air is 'Prana Vayu', when someone dies the body would have been void of air. But in reality it's different. After death, air called 'Dhananjaya Vayu' remains inside a body. If a dead body is void of air, it would have been squeezed to a thin sheet by external air pressure. On the other hand, if 'Prana Vayu' is the air around, then if we pump some air in a dead body, it would have got back life again. So by this logic it's clear that the air we see is not 'Prana'.
A subtle refined substance which is delicately dissolved in air and is getting condensed in the body mixing through breathing is called 'Prana Vayu'. This condensed 'Prana' is the part of God (Ishvara-angsha), which manifest itself to living being. The condensation of 'Prana' goes away when someone dies. But where does it go? It goes to 'Sukhakasha' (finer sky), by subliming into air being very thin and finer, and imperceptibly occupies throughout the infinite, being invisible. As the heat of the lamp is spread throughout the air after it is put off, the lamp of condensed Prana after leaving body sublimes in air and sky delicately. Then according to 'Sanskar' (prejudice), it moves in the direction of attraction of mind.
