Unit 3 - Audio

In this unit we will use Audacity a FREE program that runs on either Mac or PC. You can download it at home from here. It is already installed on the school computers. There is a good built-in help system with step-by-step examples, and you can also search for YouTube videos.

If you can bring HEADPHONES to class for this unit it would be greatly appreciated

If you do find/learn something cool, please share it with me and the class. This is my first time using Audacity and I am learning also.

First, we need a bit of background knowledge. Create a webpage called Audio and explain/define these terms:

Your explanations/definitions should discuss each term as related to audio and the recording industry.

- Mono

- Stereo

- Compression

- Noise

- Peak output

- Reverberation time (explain what it is and find the reverb time for a typical listening room AND large concert hall)

With the following terms, if you are asked to explain what a WAV file is don't just say it's a "Waveform Audio File", explain what companies/computers use the format, what type of compression it is, and when was it created.

- Uncompressed Audio Formats (explain what this means AND explain WAV and AIFF)

- Lossless Compression (explain what this means AND explain FLAC, M4A and WMA)

- Lossy Compression (explain what this means AND explain MP3 and AAC)
