The Samsung Solve For Tomorrow contest is big, over $2 million in prizes. Interested students form a class team and solve challenges along the way. To enter, your teacher must apply to get your team in the contest. That would be me?! Let me know if you're interested. Contest Information

MIRA (Monterey Institute for Research in Astronomy) offers a paid internship program. They have a big telescope in the mountains south of Monterey and do current research. They're currently taking applications, due April 1st. If interested, make a preliminary inquiry at mira@mira.org or by telephone (831) 883-1000. Aspirations in Computing Award: Aspirations

The M3 Competition (Moody's Mega Math Challenge) runs every February. Students have several months to form teams and prepare for a one-weekend Challenge problem. Besides great prizes and the chance to work on a real problem in applied math, students who enter can get FREE copies of Mathematica and Matlab, which are the professional standards in math programs. Stanford SPLASH: Interested in hands-on weekend science workshops? The Stanford Splash program invites students to attend student-taught workshops during the school year. The cost is low, and spaces are limited: Stanford SPLASH

Lexus Eco Challenge: Contest Information

The Questbridge Scholars Program is an excellent program whose goal is to match up students with the best colleges in the country. If accepted to the program, Questbridge helps you with applying to schools of your choice, and help facilitate getting scholarships. Questbridge has helped a number of SVHS students in recent years. The Regeneron Science Talent Search is BIG, offering a $250,000 scholarship for the grand prize winner! Hit the link to see their website for more information. You can start the process in the summer of junior year, and their deadline is in mid-November.

Want to work in a research lab and get PAID for doing so? The SEAP program is open to students in the summer between junior and senior year, AND also to graduating seniors. The nearest SEAP lab is in Monterey. Applications are due in early January. SEAP Information

The Cosmos Program at UC Santa Cruz has students working with university professors, doing hands-on experimentation. Appllications due Feb 20th.

The MAGIC Program pairs up girls with women working in a variety of technical fields, for 3-6 month mentorships.

MIT gives 80 high school students the chance to help in current research each summer in their Research Science Institute -- and other than your travel to Massachusetts, it's FREE! RSI Information and Application Applications are due in mid-January.

More MIT (for girls only): Womens' Technology Program is a month-long summer residential program at MIT where students can explore Computer Science/Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering. The program, at the end, writes you one letter of recommendation (and about 50% of the girls who attend WTP end up receiving admission to MIT). The program is for the summer after Junior year of high school for girls. More information and the application is at: http://wtp.mit.edu/application.html .
