Assessments

Assessments take on many new forms in the Common Core Curriculum. There are two types of assessments under Common Core: formative and summative. Formative assessments can happen formally or informally. Informally, they are the daily "checking for understanding" that occurs naturally in the math classroom when homework is checked and new instruction is given. Formal formative assessments can be diagnostic quizzes or pre-tests of material that should have been mastered such as fraction facts.

Summative assessments are usually chapter, unit, and cumulative tests. Also, after a review of basic facts, a fluency quiz may be given which would also be a summative assessment.

Performance Tasks are important assessments that can be either formative or summative. They are used to assess the 8 Mathematical Practices (MP).
