Pearl hasn't always been such a good girl, with her involvement in Joseph Kraft's book-stealing racket. Nor has she always been such a good friend to Gene Torg, trying to tempt him into it when he seemed to be either trying to go straight or to stay away from the big-time rackets. But she truly cares about him, and he her, and following her release from jail he calls her and they have lunch together. Still not sure that she wants to go straight, however, she mostly stays away from him for a while.
She is devastated when she's called to the hospital to identify his body, and overjoyed and stunned when he revives and is alright. She decides she does not want to stay away from him any longer and she will try to go straight, as he is trying.
When he comes into possession of a strange necklace from New Orleans, she likes it and tries it on out of curiosity. She ends up possessed by the evil that haunts it, and Gene barely manages to get it away from her . . . but not before she hurts him. Shaken and horrified, Pearl no longer likes it. She agrees for Gene to get rid of it.
She and Gene are very affectionate with each other, kissing and embracing, and Pearl calls him by pet names such as "Sweet", but they claim they are friends and not lovers.
