Artifact: Essay on "What is knowledge?" for LIS 880-Knowledge Management (please see attached file)
Explanation Paragraph:
At the start of the semester in Knowledge Management, the content gave us an opportunity to think broadly about the nature of information. So it seemed fitting to consider such matters in the Directed Writing assignment, our first essay. I chose the option of writing to answer the question, “What is knowledge?” I used as a starting point Aristotle’s discussion of knowledge in his overall discussion of virtues in The Nichomachean Ethics, which I studied during my first semester of undergraduate college. The main premise of my essay is that knowledge is not just information in and of itself, but is information that is put into action to serve some purpose. And that is the main purpose of the work accomplished in the field of library and information science, especially as we help people use information for some bigger purpose, because we seek after knowledge for some benefit.
