It is amazing, the power that architects have to design the future. Most structures start off as mere drawing. Then cities are built.

I've been invited to present a paper at the University of Rome in February of 2011, as part of the 5th International Conference on Design Principles and Practices. http://designprinciplesandpractices.com/conference-2011.

Synopsis: "Viewing Architectural Design as an Impetus to Spur Outer Space Development" by Dr. Edythe E. Weeks, Esq.

Architects and architecutural design students can play a key role in creating broad public interest in building of space socieites. It is 2010 and the international space station has been deemed a success by space scientists, engineers, policymakers, elected officials, and others knowledgeable about outer space activities. After more than 10 years of experiments, humankind now possesses sufficient knowledge about sustaining human life in outer space. Thus, decisions have been made recently to take the next steps to develop the final frontier. Attracting innovative talent from all disciplines will be crucial for the successful development of outer space. This paper will provide research highlighting space laws and space policies which have initiated economic incentives for the newly emerging industries including space tourism, private spaceship development, commercial spaceports, space mining and orbital and other space hotels. This paper suggests that architectural design can serve as a creative impetus for outer space development. Challenges and opportunities for teaching online and virtual outer space development and space law courses to architectural design students will be discussed.

This collaborative book by A.S. Howe, Syd Mead and Brent Sherwood, "compiles thirty chapters on the theory and practice of designing and building inhabited environments in outer space.  Given the highly visual nature of architecture, the book is rich in graphics including diagrams, design drawings, digital renderings, and photographs of models and of executed and operational designs" accessed from http://spacearchitect.org/ (see "publication" button) on May 2, 2010, or click Order .
