Relationships involve 2 people and Society has long defined this as a Heterosexual union. Over 3000 years ago Lot’s wife was changed to a pillar of salt for even considering the alternatives as she fled Gomorrah and Sodom.
And so stands the Judo-Christian pillar of virtue today ever assisted by Bob McCroskrie and Family First with their fundamentalist and out-dated view of what a relationship actually is, and unsurprisingly their Web site immediately came under Denial of Service attack.
Amos, to his credit upon reflection, identifies the real crime in these cities as those ”…who oppress the poor, who crush the needy…”Amos 4:11. Tied up with this of course would have been the symptomatic myriad sexual and abuse connotations, listed below in the Duluth Wheel.
Today the Vagaries of Relationship Interventions, such that occurred to Lot and his wife have been distilled down to the “Wheels of Abuse” and characterised as the “Victimisation of Women by Men in the battle of Power and Control”. Duluth is in a sense is today’s antithesis of Sodom and Gomorrah, we don’t need some Desert Dwelling Whirlwind Deity to rain down Interventionist Fire and Brimstone, we have our own spinning wheel that can do this by Legislation and Drop of the Hat protection orders with far greater effect than an allegory.
The DIAP, or DULUTH system that Gender characterises and Gender assigns the issue of Domestic Violence has made it past 30 or more years of activism, and promotion of its departure from accepted Physiological practices, and proudly wears this as badge of honour delivering the modern day Interventions for families in times of stress and changing circumstances in many jurisdictions.
Its goal; to be the first choice gold plated front line of DV response, universally aligning itself with the United Nations mandate to actively promote equality for Women worldwide.
So much for mandatory relationship counselling that is the accepted mainstay of front line social services,
we move straight to the sledge hammer to nail in a tack, so pervasive and destructive is the oppression of
The DV attributable infant deaths in New Zealand have remained static at about 10 per annum whilst all the Violence is not OK, anti smacking, lower thresholds of “abuses”, monitoring, encouraging people to speak up and “snitch” on others, compile databases, involve Medical practitioners to identify early likely offenders has received front page attention, relentlessly exasperating officialdom and the population alike.
The seeming dramatic increasing rates of Domestic Violence, as sensationalised by the media, and the supposed disintegration of an “underclass “in our society are hyped
in a publicity frenzy to justify an increasingly tightening noose in which to stifle and debilitate potential offenders...they are after all just “Mongrels” and need an equivalent response to deal to them. Do they not? Duluth is Legislative Violence, that’s what Intervention by definition actually is.
The ratio of offenders in our Prison Male to Female runs at about 16:1. Ah ha, Duluth is absolutely justified as the figures show Violence is a Male issue and is reflected in the statistics. It’s no surprise the Duluth System was an offshoot of a Police Departments search of an answer to recidivist Domestic Violence affecting 2% of the population, to which is was designed to be the definitive empirical solution.
But when we have a look at the actual Domestic Violence related statistics we find a very different situation. Dutton and Corvo have found this ratio to likely as high as 51%/49%. Domestic Violence happens at times of relationship stress and is Gender neutral in its manifestation. Conventional practice is to assist the relationship to survive or calmly dissolve by working on communication between the 2 parties involved, not inflaming it with Gender bias and Victimisation thinking.
The most interesting thing to comprehend is that Relationships, Heterosexual or Same sex, have just the same behaviour characteristics in times of tension.
The proof that this unfortunate experiment we have subjected ourselves to can be shown to be malarkey is when we look at the reality of Relationships of different compositions, NON GENDER SPECIFIC, i.e. Same Sex Marriages or relationships and the realisation that they disintegrate in exactly the same ways.
DULUTH assumes a static Gender Driven Power and Control interplay in a failed relationship and Intervention as the only solution. In truth Power and Control is dynamic, negotiated and transient across the 2 partners, in state of fluidity and flux during the relationship. When the relationship becomes stressed as 98% of them do, this transient “jostling” dissipates without any need for Intervention.
The issue is what can we do with the 2% of the population with dependency, poverty and educational issues that are incapable of responding to quality counselling services to determine their and their offspring’s best outcomes? Perhaps the answer is in the Prison population figures, as a society we just have people that don’t make the standards of behaviour we legislate for, our mores. However applying a solution fit for these 2% to the 98% of the population, that can attend to their own needs, is just destructive and by Intervening we are producing a nation of Salty Pillars, transfixed, frozen and incapable of contribution to our economic prosperity.
Our Gay and Lesbian community’s history however is proudly activist against injustice, far more attuned to root out unnecessary, unwarranted and unacceptable intrusions in to peoples private affairs. Their activism when confronted by Duluth Intervening in their “jostling” and relationship stress I predict will evoke a far more poignant and vociferous complaint about the injustice of using a failed Gender blaming programme designed for only 2% or our population as a one size fits all bureaucratic, senseless and brutish incarnation we “tolerate” in the name of expediency at present.
The Book Family interventions in domestic violence
By John Hamel, Tonia L. Nicholls is quite clear about this.
page 219
Family violence research and intervention has become isolated from general standards of practice in social welfare, criminal justice, public health, psychology and behavioural intervention, with certifying agencies mandating training in an ineffective model based on tautological and pseudo-theory ( Dutton and Corvo ). specifically this is the DULUTH model that the Family Court system is based upon.

Unfortunately the domestic field has treated situational and characterological battering as one in the same, assuming that low level violence will escalate into severe domestic abuse ( Walker, 1979). However, the two types of violence may be qualitatively different ( Johnson and Feraro, 2000). The violence committed by family-only intimate partner abusers tends to be situational in context. In situational IPV women are as violent at least as men, although they usually do less damage. Left without intervention, most of these situationally violent marriages remain stable or de-escalate. They do not progress into characterological battery ( Dutton and Corvo, in press)
