REMOVE DULUTH CAMPAIGN

Why discuss this in relation to DV figures and Youth Suicide ?
– Because its causing more of them, and we blindly implemented this in the hope it would cure these issues, not make them worse.
DULUTH is a programme sold to our Justice System as a Social Engineering solution to what were perceived a major issues of Child Deaths initially , but it has expanded to include a myriad of abuses from its “Power Wheel” with the ever offered promise that as we tighten the noose so things will improve.
Worse still the UN drives its Women’s’ rights activism using the DULUTH “paradigm” as the forefront of this effort. In a foul feedback loop, we are then measured and compared Internationally by this programme.

To quote the major points;
“The Domestic Abuse Intervention Project was the first multi-disciplinary program designed to address the issue of domestic violence. This experimental program, conducted in Duluth, Minnesota in 1981, coordinated the actions of a variety of agencies dealing with domestic conflict. The program has become a model for programs in other jurisdictions seeking to deal more effectively with domestic violence.[3]
According to the Duluth Model, "women and children are vulnerable to violence because of their unequal social, economic, and political status in society".[4]
The Duluth Model is based on a "violence is patriarchal" model......
Donald Dutton, a psychology professor at the University of British Columbia who has studied abusive personalities, states: "The Duluth Model was developed by people who didn't understand anything about therapy." He also insists that gender doesn't play a role in domestic violence.[5]
The exclusive focus on males as perpetrators and the rejection of system dynamics models has been criticized from perspectives influenced by psychology and family therapy. The fields of psychology, psychiatry, and social work all provide for application of skill learning, improved social understanding and practiced behavioral mastery to provide for corrected and alternative behaviors. By contrast, the Duluth Model presents only "once an abuser, always an abuser" constructions to this important social problem.”

Dr Dutton’s’ data challenged DULUTH thinking in the early 2000’s and our academics in Social DV issues have been wilfully blind to his efforts, until now unsurprisingly, when we have our own data collection via the NZ Police at the front line agreeing with him. We have been in collective academic denial for at least 10 years over this issue.
We are proudly at the Bleeding edge with this programme.....BUT IT IS NOT ACHIEVING ANY RESULTS.
There seems to have been some seductive logic that Duluth was a minority woman’s solution that was applicable to some” ethnic issues” of child abuse we seemed to have in New Zealand which matched the minority disadvantaged women that Duluth research was based upon, a sample size of just 9 , and without any public discussion the local jurisdictions around New Zealand began to adopt it as it appeared to be confluent with Women’s rights and pro Feminist policies. These are the same academics who were blind to the realities that DULUTH is a faulty concept from the get go.
New Zealand has been at the fore front of implementing the DULUTH System and people like Ruth Herbert have been lamenting the efficacy of the programme, doubtless blaming the implementation rather than the system itself. See the contents of Ruth Herbert’s paper page 3 for confirmation.

In some unfortunate misinformed but genuinely misplaced “Own Goal” action Owen Glen has appointed her to his “Council” on DV. Doubtless Ruth's next excuse will be that the model hasn’t been implemented properly, rather than admit it is a failed paradigm as Dr Dutton has been so Internationally active to highlight.

Not only are our DV statistics blown out of proportion, the collateral damage of Youth Suicide, particularly in the young male population, is able to be correlated, and was demonstrated by Dr Beautrais in her paper, with the implementation of the DULUTH Programme, but no one wants to talk about this disgraceful data set either.
On two fronts, due to the Myth that Males are Violent and Suicides are somehow random and not caused by the denial of hope in families, we have succumb to an unfortunate experiment.

After all the talk about Whanau, Anti-Violence we have this below.....a family so absorbed by "DV" as a political objective their own house is not in order.
These are the type of people implementing and running DV initiatives. How effective do we really think they have been ?
They are even our Politicians families.
