Many members of HILR contributed directly or indirectly to this volume. Here are those whose words appear in their essays or in quotations.

Charles Allen had careers in diplomacy and international business before joining HILR in 1997, where he has started new careers in teaching and community organizing.

Lillian Broderick taught writing and literature at several colleges before retiring from Tufts University as an associate dean. In 1993 she joined HILR, where she has found new intellectual interests and many wonderful

friends.

Mitch Cohen, PhD, an HILR member since 2005, was engaged in R&D in applied physics at several prominent research laboratories. He is an author of more than 50 technical publications and many patents.

Stan Davis, PhD, DHL, author of 13 books published in 19 languages with a million copies sold, was on the Harvard Business School faculty for eleven years. A worldwide speaker and consultant before retiring, he has been an HILR member since 2004.

Elenore Freedman, HILR member since 1992, has a Radcliffe (Harvard) BA. She worked in leadership positions in New Hampshire with organizations of citizens, school boards, principals, business leaders, foundations, governors, and universities to reform public education state-wide.

Sid Greenleaf, HILR member since 2005, has been writing poetry for two years. He was a faculty member at Harvard School of Design for 14 years and a visiting professor at several other universities. He is active in historical preservation.

TeeJay Henner, with graduate degrees in comparative literature, has taught at Queens, Hunter, and Rutgers. HILR member since 1992, she has led over 20 study groups, published poetry, and is now writing “From Jewish American Princess to Cambridge Bag Lady.”

Patricia Anne Hogan, HILR 2000, had a financial career in academia and corporations. Trish’s enthusiasm, love of poetry, and music serves her well leading study groups. She is active in her cohousing and Quaker communities

and works for peace and justice.

John Hovorka, ScD (MIT, 1961) was a professor of physics until his retirement. He authored three books and many articles. He taught graduate courses in engineering and undergraduate courses in physics, mathematics, history, philosophy, and literature.

Hy Kempler, PhD, was a clinical psychologist and on the adjunct faculty of several universities. Since joining HILR in 2000, he led study groups on aging and the mind/body connection. Active in Jewish organizations, he loves golf and biking.

Prudence King, EdD, Harvard, joined HILR in 2006 following a long career in teacher education. Now engaged in study and writing at HILR, she continues to work with beginning teachers in the Boston area.

Peter Kugel, a member of HILR since 2005, taught computer science at Boston College for 35 years.

Dolores Murphy, HILR member since 2006, was a schoolteacher, business owner, and caregiver. She has led study groups in drama and literature at Boston College and HILR and has authored an unpublished book on Alzheimer’s disease.

Ross Neisuler, MD, HILR member since 2004, was a primary care physician for 35 years; an administrator of quality improvement, diversity, and outreach programs; and a community activist for the homeless. He loves history, politics, oil painting, and people.

Milt Paisner who joined HILR in 1982, has led study groups for 52 consecutive semesters. Elected Council President three times, he receivedthe HILR Distinguished Service Award in 1996. He also chaired the 10th, 15th, and 20th Anniversary celebrations.

Ellie Porter, HILR member since 1992, had a career in public relations. She has been an HILR Council President, Admissions Committee member, Nominating Committee Chair, 30th Anniversary Celebration Co-Chair, and is the Institute’s Ombudsman.

David Rich was vice president and associate general counsel at Sheraton Hotel Corporation. HILR member since 1997, he loves and plays jazz and has a newfound and growing interest in writing poetry and fiction.

Pat Ruopp, EdD and a member for almost 10 years, careered her way through child rearing, early childhood education, college finance and administration, then medical research and ethnography, finally to land and happily settle in at HILR.

Kitty Selfridge, HILR member since 1996, spent the last 13 years before retiring managing documentation departments in software companies, and before that, managing a graphic design department in an architecture firm, as well as writing and editing.

Peg Senturia, HILR member since 2000, was an individual, group, and family therapist and then an organizational consultant on strategy, management training, and problem-solving teams. She’s now busy with HILR, town government, gardening, and grandchildren.

Maurice Stein, PhD, taught sociology, anthropology, peer counseling, and meditation at Brandeis for 47 years. He spent the past seven years at HILR exploring aging through study groups, conversations, and unavoidable

personal experience.

Sigi Tishler, MD, practiced and taught oncology until four years ago. At HILR she relishes expanding her horizons in the humanities and science. When not at HILR, she enjoys family, nature, and playing chamber music with friends.

Fran Vaughan, volunteer and college textbook editor, joined HILR in 1989. She has led 22 study groups in reading and writing poetry. Named First Poet Laureate of HILR, she recently completed a family history.

Rhoada Wald, EdD, HILR member for 11 years, coordinated “Conversations on Aging” and led study groups on many topics, including aging. A specialist in nontraditional higher education for adults, she pioneered innovative approaches to learning in the US and abroad.

Jane Weingarten devoted her career to journalism and communications about humanitarian issues. Since joining HILR in 2006, she has enjoyed reading Russian literature, mentoring a student, writing personal stories, grandchildren, music, and her newest interest—delivery of health care.

Antonia Woods taught high school history for 38 years. She joined HILR in 2006. She leads hikes for the Appalachian Mountain Club, practices yoga, runs teacher workshops, and enjoys unstructured time.

Geraldine Zetzel, HILR member since 1994, has led study groups in literature and psychology. She taught middle-school English and human development for teachers-in-training and was a family mediator and child advocate. A published poet, she is HILR’s current Poet Laureate.
