Romeo and Juliet is a famous tragedy written by Shakespeare. It explores the themes of role of women in society. fate and destiny, and obviously, love. Other themes involved are often juxtaposed with contrasting themes. For example, the significance of the light and dark, love and hate, reality and fantasy, youth and age and many others. The different attitudes of the characters toward love is also an important factor because love is one of the main themes in the play (no duh). The nurse sees love as a sexual and physical relationship, Lady Capulet sees it as being very materialistic whilst Romeo and Juliet focus more on the actual concept of love.
Main Characters (Montagues in red, Capulets in blue and neutral in black)
I know that some of these characters don't speak much, but their role is important in the play as a supporting character and their opinions affect the "bigger" characters.
Romeo and Juliet was based on an original Italian story, which was later translated into a French poem (French? I don't know). He condensed the story from having a duration of months, into no more than 5 days. The condensed drama shows how much the youth and the age are different because of the speed things change at. For example, Juliet tells Romeo to "purpose marriage" only hours after the Capulet feast at which they first met one another.
