How can fluoride protect our teeth?
Fluoride begins strengthening the teeth before they even erupt. The fluoride that is found in food, water and our daily diet will contribute to the enamel (outer hard surface of the teeth) during its development. This form of protection is known as "systemic" (1). Once the teeth have erupted, the teeth will continue to be remineralized by fluoride through ingestion. Fluoride will adhere to the teeth throughout our daily intakes of liquid (including certain mouthwashes and toothpastes), food products and dietary supplements. As bacteria begin to demineralize our teeth throughout the day, fluoride will help to rebuild what has been lost.

If caries have a high probability of being prevented through fluoridated water, then why would someone refuse to take advantage of it? Caries can cause discomfort for individuals causing them to have sensitivity to sweats, cold, heat. An individual may also experience a tooth ache which can lead to continual discomfort all day. Ultimately, drinking fluoridated water is helping your teeth daily and has little, too no cost to you.

Should children use fluoride toothpaste?
Children should not use fluoride if they are under the age of two unless advised to do so by a health professional. When the children become older than two years, it is safe to use fluoridated toothpaste but only a pea size amount. The parents of the children should assist and supervise them.
