Rubber or plastic tips are referred to as rubber tip stimulators and are made of conical, flexible rubber or a plastic tip that is attached to a handle. Plastic tips tend to be more rigid and may cause damage to the gums. By removing plaque from your teeth daily with use of the rubber or plastic tip, you will see overall improvement in health of your gums. This is indicated for individuals who have periodontal disease, and who have inflamed, swelled gums. It can also be used to remove plaque and debris from exposed furcation areas, type II and III ebrasure spaces, and along the margin of the gums. (1)

Rubber tips are used for massaging the gums as well as recountouring the gums after periodontal therapy. It's role is to effectively remove plaque along the gum lines. Use the rubber tip on the cheek and tongue side making sure that the rubber tip comes into contact with the gums in-between the teeth. When using these devices for plaque removal, the tip is placed at a 90° angle in the area between your teeth next to the margin of your gums. The tip is then moved with a sweeping motion from the gum line toward the edge of the tooth using short back and forth strokes. Gently massage the gums in-between the teeth with the rubber tip in a gentle circular motion for ten seconds. Do this for all the teeth on surfaces toward the cheeks and the surfaces toward the tongue. Move to the next tooth and repeat the process again. Be careful not to irritate the gum tissues with the tip. (1)
