Another way for efficient interdental plaque removal is the use of toothpicks. By toothbrushing, flossing, and using a toothpick, all three methods used together are one of the best ways to remove plaque. Proper and consistent use of the toothpick can result in gums that are firm and healthy. However, improper use can damage the gum tissues. Toothpicks are used to remove plaque along the gum line and areas between the gums and the tooth. It may not be as effective in removing plaque from teeth with wide spaces. Toothpicks are considered easier to manipulate than floss, and more people prefer to use toothpicks. The toothpick is placed at 90° angle at the gum line in-between the teeth and moved in and out from the outside surface to the inside surface. It can also be rubbed in-between the teeth using a gentle up and down motion. (1)

Holding a toothpick with your fingers is not as effective as using a toothpick holder. After reaching the areas in-between the teeth in the front of the mouth, it’s hard to move the toothpick toward the teeth in the back of your mouth, and hard to clean the inside surfaces of your teeth, the surfaces toward the tongue. A toothpick holder is a plastic tool that is able to hold the toothpick in the correct position so you can gain easy access to all areas of the mouth, including the hard to reach teeth in the back of the mouth. Using a toothpick holder will enable an individual to effectively control and access the teeth in the back of the mouth. (1)
