In no particular order, here are some tips that I have compiled for beginners from those who have played for awhile.
* Read the Help Manual on the Munzee website. Also check out all the links at the bottom of the page of the website.
* Turn your filters on! The default filter is set to only show you greenies. If you want to find more on the map, you will need to turn your filters on!
*Munzee types - Guide to Types
*Never tag Munzee staff on Facebook. If their notifications pile up, they will leave the groups and our ability to connect with them is deminished.
*Read the notes (hints) on munzees. They often give helpful tips on where to look for the munzee.
*To follow up on the previous point, good, descriptive notes are much appreciated when you deploy as coords are not always spot on and what may seem like an obvious placement to you may not be to the hunter! How many signs or light posts are around? Which sign is it, where on the sign is it? The actual sign, on the post, inside the post? Good hints help avoid unnecessary "unable to locate" entries.
*Some badges, including the Pi and the Repeater are easier to get when you first start playing. Since they are based on your score at the end of the day, they can be affected by others capping your munzees. Try working toward these badges before you deploy a lot. They are still attainable later, but are easier in the beginning!
*If you plan to join a clan in the future, don't cap everything in sight in the beginning. You will wish you had those points back when you join a clan!
*Remember that phone GPS coords are not always as accurate as a GPSr unit. And your phone may give a different reading than someone else's. So you may need to widen your circle of hunt a little. Descriptive names and Hints are helpful.
*Read/Subscribe the Munzee Blog. This is where you will get official announcements from Munzee such as specials, events, clan requirements, etc.
*Get to know the local players! Working together makes the game more fun! Attend events, when you can, to get to know others!
*Think about where you are deploying. Will you or your hunter draw unwanted attention?
*The premium membership is worth it! You will love the additional features!
*Before you cap a motel, hotel or resort, deploy nearby FIRST! Otherwise your room deploy will throw up the 150ft proximity restriction and you will not be able to deploy near the motel, hotel or resort. If you deploy your sticker first, you will only have to worry about getting far enough away from the original sticker. (50ft)
*When deploying a string, such as along a guard rail, space yours 160 - 165 feet. Going that 10-15 extra feet over 150' makes it easier for two people to deploy between yours.
*When you deploy in a new area, look to see what types of munzees the locals have been deploying in that area. Sometimes they are working on building clusters of a certain type. Clusters can also indicate where the locals tend to play. Tourist spots may be great for those passing through, but are not always convenient for those who play regularly in the area. (IE, putting a clover to attract mythical creatures in the tourist spot might gain you lots of initial points, but the locals may not appreciate having to fight the traffic to the MCs that will inevitably land there!)
*Join Munzee groups for information, fun and getting to know others who are passionate about the game. Here in St. Louis, the Munzee St. Louis Group is glad to help you out! There are also global groups that have many friendly, helpful players. For example Munzee Water Cooler. A quick search on Facebook for Munzee will bring up lots of global and local groups.
*There are several types of munzees that, when capped will scatter new things for you to cap for a short period of time (usually 2 hours). Examples are elemental types (fire, ice, etc), Air mysteries, Sir Prize, Bowling, Joysticks, and certain bouncer like Poseidon and Trojan Unicorns. If you have your expiring specials filter on, you should be able to see the new scatters. Some will land on existing munzees and some will create new temporary munzees.
*You must have capped 25 physicals to leave an UTL or Needs repair entry on a munzee. Unless you are absolutely sure that the munzee is missing or unscannable, it is best for only one of your party to leave a "needs maintenance" or "unable to locate" entry. Sometimes a fresh pair of eyes will be able to find what seems to be missing. So rather than instantly putting a munzee into maintenance mode (which takes two such entries), just have one in your party leave an entry.
*Download the Cuppazee App. It is a wonderful 3rd Party tool to help with several aspects of Munzee Play and is a great way to keep track of your clan activity and special captures.
