Went to System Concepts and was noted to go to “the computer museum”. There is an SC note taped to it stating that.
It is also referred to as LE. On the console it has a Dymo label that says: “LE P.O.S.”
It was snarfed up by Stacken and fortunately preserved.

Intact except for the terminal line IO cab. Including RP06 and 4 RP07s. Some one has offed the voltage monitor boards, the tiny ones in the IO cab, but there is a bypass for them :) I've booted the FE, and it is fine. It is in bits due to a house fire at the moment.

Purchased in 1968/1969 time frame for use with EIA-680 Analog Computer for hybrid computation pair. The facility was the Hybrid Computation Lab which was part of the Electrical Engineering Department at the Penn State University Park campus. The system was located in the EE West building. The Hybrid Computer Lab was removed from the EE Department and became a College-wide facility named the Engineering Computer Lab which supported general computer operations in the College. At one time there was the DEC-10, DEC-2020, VAX 11/780, VAX 11/785, VAX 8550, Harris H800, and two IBM 4341 systems along with multiple VS3100 Workstations and assorted MicroVax systems. When the centralized computing facility was phased out (CEDCC formed) in the 1995/1996 timeframe the DEC-10 and all other systems were scraped.

Computer Weekly, 8/1/70, page 12. Hatfield’s PDP-10 to be made available to local schools: A major project which will allow substantial computer access to schools in Hertfordshire will come into operation in September when Hatfield Polytechnic completes its installation of a DEC PDP-10 multi-access computer valued at nearly £300,000. The polytechnic has previously experimented with computer education in schools linking schools to one of its two Elliott 803B machines. This facility was limited to six schools and allowed each school only about one hour per day of central processor time. The new computer will have a 64K 36-bit word core store with a fixed disc of 500,000 words capacity, two exchangeable disc units of 5.2 million words each, four DEC tape units and paper tape and punched card peripherals. A PDP-8/I will be used as communications processor.

The Fritz Haber Institute purchased the system late in 1973, it was installed in April 1974, in fact with CPU S/N 628. Within the first months of operation the CPU got stuck several times per month, Digital field service was unable to fix the problem, they decided to replace the CPU, S/N 628 was carried back to the US, and we got S/N717. Later on, another institute of our society, the Max Planck Institute for Coal Research purchased a KI as well, replacing a KA system there, and they got S/N 718. This institute switched to a VAX system in the late 70s, and Fritz Haber Institute received their KI to run a double a processor system 717/718 TOPS-10. This installation was operational until 1987, thereafter most of the hardware was shipped to University of Gothenburg, Sweden, were a professor and his students kept a lot of old DEC hardware running.

The "Model-A backplane" has 1024 words of 96 bit microcode. "Model-B backplane" is 2048 words of microcode.
Internal channels requires cache. A 2040 is a 2050 without cache. Extended addressing and G-floating
both require a Model-B backplane for the microcode (but the 2020 can execute extended addressing instructions
even though it is limited to a single section). A 2060 with an I/O bus is identical to a 1091 painted orange.
A 1090 is a 1080 with internal channels, and the 1090 may or may not have a Model-B backplane.
2050's come with or without a Model-B backplane. 7.02 and Rel 6 require extended addressing.
The KA has no paging hardware, therefore it cannot run 7-series monitors or TOPS-20.

as well as line printers, a card punch, a card reader, and a Calcomp X-Y plotter.
There were 5 or 6 STC tape drives connected to a TX01 controller driven simultaneously
by the DX10, DX20, and SA10 tape channel interfaces. It was pretty neat to see Tri-ported tapes running nearly continuously as we queued the I/O across all 3 CPU/channels.

Alan Greig a.greig@virgin.net
This DEC2060 belonged to Dundee College of Technology "Dundee Tech" (now Abertay University). That's the one the "Introduction to the DECSYSTEM-20" booklet in the web archives was written for. Started life as a 2040 in 1977. Turned off 1990 or 1991 (hard to recall now exactly as we had several extended periods of downtime after the machine was taken off support which we were able to work around later. I worked there in a junior position in the early 80s and returned in a senior position in 1992. I tended to pop in from time to time and perform basic TOPS-20 housekeeping after most of their TOPS-20 people had moved on and new staff tended to do VMS or Unix. University of Dundee, half a mile away, had a KL-10 (1115) and a KS-10 (4607) both running TOPS-10. I can no longer recall the serial numbers but have contacted their ex admins. Apparently they may still have the UK written X25 front end code used on JANET before it morphed into an IP network. Arrick Wilkinson was the former director there but back in the early 70s he ran the Glasgow University Nuclear Physics KA-10 under TOPS-10.

4097 TOPS-10 DEC Development “TWINKY”, Marlboro, MA KS10
Do you know how TWINKY got its name? TOPS-10 had a SET HOST command,
or so people thought. It was actually SET HOSTES, because someone really wanted
to type "SET HOSTESs TWINKY", but we never had a machine by that name.
So with the advent of another development machine in the lab, someone made the age old joke come true.
