Introduction to the Modern Concept of Atomic Structure

I. VIDEO ON THE MODERN CONCEPT OF ATOMIC STRUCTURE

A. What's the Difference Between Mass Number and Atomic Mass

B. Practice Problems: Net Charge, Mass Number, Atomic Number

II. NOTES ON THE MODERN CONCEPT OF ATOMIC STRUCTURE

An element in the Periodic Table is typically presented in the format below

ATOMIC NUMBER = Number of protons

ATOMIC SYMBOL= short hand symbol for an

element

ATOMIC MASS= average mass of the all

the isotopic forms of an

element.

In order to specify a particular isotopic form of an element, scientists use the following notation

or the standard format being

MASS NUMBER= number of protons and neutrons

ATOMIC NUMBER= number of protons

By having this information, one can calculate the following characteristics of an isotopic form an element

  • number of protons, neutrons, and electrons

  • mass number

  • atomic number
