Writing

In First Grade we use the Benchmark Writing Workshop program which uses explicit modeling and gradual release to students. Using this format students will:

*Use appropriate spaces between words

*Form letters correctly

*Begin each sentence with a capital letter

*End each sentence with punctuation

*Sound out unknown words

*Understand how to write a complete sentence

*Write 3 or more complete sentences about one topic

*Add more details/vocabulary to make writing more interesting

*Edit own writing

*Revise own writing

*Write a narrative with a setting, character(s), problem, and solution

*Write an informative report with facts and details using research

*Write a book review using own opinion and point of view

Grammar, vocabulary, and language/speaking skills are built into the writing program.
