Your child will learn a new phonics skill each week in first grade. We will practice applying these skills in reading (decoding) and writing/spelling (encoding) as well as through phonological awareness (hearing the sounds). Look for information to come home each week so you know what skill we are working on and what skills we have already covered.
Phonics skills taught in 1st grade:
Short vowels
Consonant blends at the beginning and end of words (ex: fl-flag, dr-drip, st-stop, sp-spill, nd-band, mp-stamp)
Long vowels with silent e
Digraphs: ch, sh, th, wh, -ck
Long vowel teams: ai/ay, oa/ow, ee/ea, ie/igh, ue/ew
R controlled vowels: ar, or, er, ir ,ur
Y as a vowel: EX: fly, sky, bunny, silly
Variant vowel: oo (ex-book, pool)
Diphthongs: ou/ow, oi/oy (ex-shout, boy)
Silent letters: EX: know, lamb
