About Mrs. Finnegan
What might prospective students and parents want to know about me? Let's see...
I am a former homeschooling mother, with two adult sons (both are married and graduated from college; one has completed two Master's degrees in the Classical languages, the other is an electrical engineer. Both have beautiful children, whom I adore.) Homeschooling my boys was the calling and joy of my life. Though I attended Clarke University and the University of Maryland, receiving a degree in music education, my experience homeschooling my children revealed a passion for learning and classical education, and was a training ground for my current teaching methodology and philosophy.
The first question of the Westminster Confession of Faith Shorter Catechism asks, "What is the chief end of man?" The answer is, "Man's chief end is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever." This is a concise summary of the goal of education. I believe that education should be the pursuit of God, the study of the details of His creation, and the conduit to understanding our God, His world, and ourselves.
Education ought to be normative, comprehensive, and interrelated, training both the mind and the heart for service to God and the communities of which we are a part. I seek to recapture the best of the classical Christian tradition in education in the context of the 21st century by designing studies that are rigorous, word-centered, non-compartmentalized, and practical. In this context, I seek to identify and build on the strengths of each student, and to identify and remediate the weaknesses of each, as we work towards development in both the academic realm and the realm of the character.
I am a member of Bryce Avenue Presbyterian Church, and seek, in my teaching and my life witness, to point to the truth, goodness and beauty of Christ.
