IAN ALLEN COMPLETES SUMMER INTERNSHIP AT SATURN INDUSTRIES

September 7, 2014

Chatham, NY: Chatham senior Ian Allen did more this summer than just kick back and relax for his vacation. Instead, Ian made plans ahead of time to seek out an internship to help him explore and gain experience in his likely career field: engineering. This resulted in Ian completing a 54-hour internship at Saturn Industries, Inc. in Hudson, NY.

Chatham business teacher and work-based learning coordinator, Michael Loomis, made the connection for Ian with Saturn through Chatham’s CEIP program. CEIP stands for Career Exploration Internship Program. Through the program, students participate in a non-paid internship for 54 hours and complete 27 hours of classroom instruction time. Students receive one-half of a school credit, equal to a 1 semester course. Loomis said, “Most students take CEIP as a class and complete their internship hours during the school year. Ian’s senior year schedule was already quite full, but he still wanted to gain the valuable career experience of an internship. We were able to work out a great arrangement with Saturn Industries for Ian to complete his hours not long after last school year ended. He will complete the 27 hours classroom time as an independent study.”

Ian had this to say about the internship, "It was a great experience that I believe anyone who is even just thinking about going into the field of engineering should partake in. I learned about the various machinery and the different types of precise measuring equipment and techniques that are vital to this occupation. I was additionally privileged to be able to work with a program called SolidWorks and even able to 3D print my final designs. Lastly, the people at Saturn Industries were very kind and informative and allowed me to have the great experience that I had."

MaryAnne Lee, President of Saturn Industries, said, “Participating in Chatham High School’s Summer Internship Program was a wonderful opportunity for Saturn Industries, Inc. to build a relationship between school and the workplace. It allowed our staff to share their expertise, knowledge, innovation, technology and at the same time provide meaningful work. Ian brought to Saturn a great attitude, hard-work and self-motivation: all the ingredients for a great future employee.

Loomis added, “I look forward to connecting more students and businesses in the area with internship experiences like this one. The opportunity of obtaining real-world experience in the form of an internship is something that many more students should take advantage. What better way to learn about the student’s possible career path can there be than spending time under the tutelage of experts in the field?”
