Grading Policies

Did you know that parents/guardians can sign up to access their child's grades via the parent portal on School Tool? YOU CAN! Contact the guidance department for more information. This begins in the 2014-2015 school year.

My grading policies:

WHAT MAKE UP THE GRADES?

    • In-class assignments

    • Homework assignments (though limited)

    • Quizzes

    • Unit Tests

    • Projects

    • Midterm (for full year classes only)

    • Final Exam/Project

HOW ARE THE GRADES CALCULATED?

    • Each graded piece is worth a number of points.

    • Point value of assignments is typically 10 points, though longer or larger assignments will be worth more.

    • Quizzes range between 20 and 50 points, depending on their length.

    • Unit, or module tests are usually 100 points.

    • Projects are typically 100 points.

    • For full-year classes, mid-terms are 300 points, and included in the 2nd quarter grade.

    • The final exam/project is worth 20% of the total class grade.

    • In half year classes, each quarter is worth 40% of the total class grade.

    • In full year classes, each quarter is worth 20% of the total class grade.

WHAT IF A STUDENT IS ABSENT THE DAY AN ASSIGNMENT, HOMEWORK, OR PROJECT IS DUE - OR THE DAY A QUIZ/TEST WAS TAKEN?

    • Quizzes and tests must be taken the day a student returns or the day after. They will be in the library for the student to take during their study hall, lunch, or after school.

    • Projects and homework are expected to be turned in the day returned to school if the student was present the day before it was due. If longer absences resulted in the student missing time in class to work on the project, additional time will be allowed - worked out with Mr. Loomis and the student.

    • Missed in-class assignments must be made up within three school days.

WHAT IF WORK WAS NOT TURNED IN BY THE DEADLINE?

    • Within each quarter's 5-week marking session, I will accept late work, but points will be deducted if turned in later than the accepted time frame.

    • If quizzes or tests are not made up within the timeframe, the student may be sent to take the assessment during my class and will be responsible for making up any work missed during that class period.

HOW DOES THIS DIFFER AMONG BUSINESS CLASSES?

    • If the class is taught by me, these policies are pretty consistent. Please check out each classes website, where the syllabus can be viewed for each class.

    • I reserve the right to make changes to these grading policies during the school year as deemed necessary. If the changes are substantial, they will be communicated.

HOW FREQUENTLY ARE GRADES UPDATED?

    • I make an effort to grade and return assignments as quickly as possible.

    • Smaller assignments and quizzes should be updated within a couple of days.

    • Larger projects and tests that take a longer time to review and grade will be updated in SchoolTool within a week.

    • Quizzes and tests will be returned to students once all class members have taken them and they have been graded.

    • Midterms and final exams/final projects are typically not returned. They are stored with administration per school policy.

ARE THERE ANY SPECIAL CODES ON SCHOOL TOOL?

    • You may see either an "E" or a "NC" in place of a grade.

    • "E" stands for "exempt." The student does not need to complete this assignment. This will happen in rare situations.

    • "NC" means not completed. This is an overdue assignment that was never completed or turned in by the student. As mentioned previously, I do accept late work within a range, but points will be deducted appropriately.

WHAT ABOUT CLASS PARTICIPATION?

    • In previous years, class participation was a portion of class grades. It is not in this year's grade calculation. Students are still expected to participate, be prepared, and on-time for class.

    • Increased class participation will typically result in better student performance.

    • Students who do not participate and not do the in-class assignments and projects during class time will not be given extra class time to finish their work that they should have completed if their class time was properly utilized. Their work may be requested on the due date or may be accepted late, though significant points may be lost due to late submission.
