Yuriy Butusov was born outside of Leningrad in 1961. He graduated from Shipbuilding Institute and worked in this trade as well as verious other professions. In 1996 he graduted from the Directing Department at the St. Petersburg State Academy of Theatre Arts. Since 1996 he worked as the director of the Theater of Leningrad City Council. Butusov attracted attention with his student work and won two Golden Mask awards. In 2002 he was invited by Konstantin Raikin to stage Ionesco’s Makbett at the Satirikon. In 2011 he was awarded the Golden Mask for “Drama/Director’s work” for “the Seagull” that he also directed at the Satirikon. In 2004 he stopped hid directing work at the Leningrad City Council but returned to the theater in 2011 as the chief director of the theatre.
