Unicorn and the Viper

With horn and hooves

he hammered his enemy;

With brow and boot-land

he beat him down.

The long legs smote

like lightning-bolts;

The hard hooves fell

like heaven’s spears.

The serpent rose

like a sea in spate;

The forest master plunged

like a fire of Heaven.

The coiling one belched out

colored fogs;

The seeker exhaled

a silver mist.

The hisses of one

made the Heavens shake;

The neighs of the other

made the netherworlds tremble.
