For Parents

This page contains answers to common questions that parents have.

How can I find out about homework and grades?

All assignments are posted in Schoology. Grades, too, are posted in Schoology. If you do not have a login and password for Schoology, please contact me or contact the Magnet Office. You can see my policy for grades in the "All About Grades" document attached below.

How can I stay in contact with you?

.You can contact me via email to jmochehale@gmail.com.

What kind of tests do you assign?

I offer a variety of different test types. Some of my tests are multiple-choice, others require extended written responses, and some are a combination. I often create computer-based tests that students take in class.

How much homework do you assign?

I am not a big fan of homework. I assign homework when it becomes clear that students need more practice with a particular topic or when I know that they need more review before a test. Students who do not finish a classwork assignment will be expected to finish the assignment as homework. I do assign projects which will require a significant amount of work outside of school. There will also be a limited number of homework assignments that follow the "flipped" classroom model.

What is a "flipped" classroom?

Traditionally, students are exposed to new material in the classroom setting and homework is used to reinforce what they learned. The disadvantage to this traditional method is that students may not have learned the material well enough to complete the homework. That leaves them struggling with no way to ask the teacher for help. In the "flipped" classroom, students are presented with new material outside of school. This new material may take the form of an online video, lecture, or PowerPoint presentation. The review takes place in the classroom, where the teacher is able to work more closely with students to ensure that they have mastered the topic.

Where can I get copies of handouts?

Often, I will give students handouts that they are expected to share with parents. I know that these handouts sometimes get left in class, crumpled and lost in a locker or backpack, or otherwise discarded before they get home. Each time I provide students with a handout for parents, I will post a copy of it below. Over time, the list of documents will grow, so it is a good idea to check back here often!
