Classwork for February 5, 2019

Imagine that a teacher has assigned you to do a report about climate change. You search the internet and you come across a website that has tons and tons of information about your subject. How can you evaluate the reliability of the information when your own knowledge of climate change is limited?

Today, you will be working with the other people at your table. Together with your partners, you will fill in a Google document with as much information as you can find about the credibility of a specific website. First, you will need to open a new tab on your browser and sign into your Google Drive. Create a new Google Doc. You should name your new Google doc as X-TableN-WebsiteEvaluation, where X is your period and N is your table number. Please ask me if you are not sure what your table number is. Then, share your Google doc with jmochehale@gmail.com.

Put your first and last name on the first line of your Google Doc. Put the first and last names of each person in your group on separate lines under yours.

Skip two lines and type "Reasons the website is credible." Skip about 5 lines and type "Reasons the website is not credible." You have now created two sections. All of the facts that you uncover that make you think the website is credible will go in the top portion, and all of the facts that you uncover that make you think the website is not credible will go in the bottom section. You may visit as many websites as you need to in order to conduct your investigation.

Try your best to keep your own opinions out of your evaluation. In other words, just because a website says something that you don't happen to believe does not mean it is not credible. Use the skills that were described in Monday's activity to do your evaluation.

When there are about 10 minutes left in the period, I will tell you that it is time to make your final decision. You will talk to your partner about what you have found. You will need to decide if your investigation leads you to believe that the information on the website is credible or not credible. Skip a few lines from the bottom of your Google Doc and write either "The website is credible," or "The website is not credible." If you and your partners cannot agree, then write which partners think it is credible and which partners believe it is not.

Here is the link to the website you will be evaluating:
