Expressive Skills are a large part of the interpreting practice. For one to producuce an accurate interpretaiton, one's expressive interpreation skills must be accurate as well. Expressive skills consists of one being able to interpret a message from English to ASL accurately. This includes fingspelling, role-shifting, appropriate use of non-manuals...etc. There are several links provided below that one can practice for expressive interperting skills. The videos range in length and each topic of discussion is different. As a mentor, I will have you (the mentee) interpret the video material provided below. I will then have you watch the interpretation upon completion and note your thoughts (complete feedback questions located at the bottom of the page). I will then give feedback and expect you to interpret the material from English to ASL a second time. As seen below, one section of the material provided is educational interpreting practices. The educational interpeting videos contain a range of different grade levels with different classroom topics. Interpreting these materials can prepare the mentee to take the EIPA (Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment).
At the bottom of this page, there are a lsit of questions that a mentee should view upon completion of each assignment. This will help you gather your thoughts regarding the assignment! Be ready to discuss your answers in our mentoring session! I can't wait to see what we can learn together in this process!
