Mara was a vibrant and successful 29-year-old woman, happily married with a loving family. A high achiever in both her education and career, she was full of joy and seemed to have the world smiling with her.
But three years into her marriage, her life took a drastic turn. Mara, who had only been an occasional social drinker, became a slave to alcohol. Her strong mind was taken over by this darkness, and she began to lie, steal, and deceive just to feed her addiction.
This problem shattered her life and traumatized her family. Her husband, parents, and in-laws watched helplessly as she lost control. Her work performance plummeted, and she often went missing for days to drink. The situation escalated as she began stealing money from her family, selling her jewelry, and even taking out bank loans to fund her habit. Mara’s life spiraled into a hell of her own making, and traditional psychiatric consultations and medication offered no relief.
When Mara's family friend asked me to help, I agreed to meet with her. After our initial interview, I was certain her case was not a typical addiction. She could drink a bottle of alcohol without any control, but then go for days without a single craving. Her mind was surprisingly clear, and she was confident she could beat the problem herself, despite her family's fears.
Mara came from a modern, educated family with no spiritual background, so my final option was to seek divine help. I used a simple hypnosis test. To my astonishment, her hand rose on its own. Seeing this, I guided her into a meditation where she found herself floating on a soft cloud. She saw her husband welcoming her with a bouquet, followed by all her family members. She then saw a beautiful stream and an angel waiting for her. The angel told her, "You are on the wrong path. You should move to the right." Mara, terrified of a nearby black figure, promised to never go toward it again. After an hour of guided meditation, she felt much better.
Mara, her husband, and her family were all skeptical, but I remained hopeful. Over the next few weeks, Mara visited me weekly to talk about her feelings and fears. Gradually, the darkness in her life faded. Her mind began to relax, and she started to truly experience the light of life—the divine light of truth and goodness.
Two years later, Mara is a completely different person. Her addiction has vanished as effortlessly as a feather in the wind. She has found self-realization and is now a better human being, a loving wife, a kind daughter, and a dedicated professional. She became a member of the Paramhansa Yogananda Satsanga Society and an avid reader of spiritual and psychology books.
Today, Mara says she is the happiest person on earth. Her only goal is to remain happy and spread her kindness and smile everywhere. Her story is a testament that "nothing is impossible when you truly want to make it happen," proving that some things are beyond the reach of medicine, and only a deeper insight can heal the soul.
