ONE THOUSAND AND ONE INITIATIVE

Responsible Media - Higher Education Initiative

I propose an effort by community leaders to develop a children's publishing house as an out of school safe haven for students and their families to learn together. Each student would be fostered in a controlled digital and physical environment.

  • Show how to publish content on subjects of local interests

  • Learn basic internet skills to interview, research and interpret abstracts

  • Evaluate, substantiate and develop testimonies or periodicals as digital content

  • Learn about personal identifiable and intellectual data rights

Sponsorship is needed in the evening and on weekends to encourage the responsible use of web services to promote critical thinking and emotional intelligence to counter the effects of targeted advertising.

To act as a catalyst to properly discover and teach next generation responsible media. Many students are unaware of the rich and vibrant testimonies of people in their surrounding communities. Many of these stories are disappearing. Teaching students fundamentals in doing research to corroborate and document eye witness accounts of events long past is an ideal use of social media platforms and living infrastructure.

Current Goal

Use low cost, Geo-intelligent media platforms to show children how to write memorials and stories about significant points of interests or people. With proper sponsorship, these stories could be corroborated, published and electronically embedded into landmarks using QR scancode technology. This application of social media could be an extension of existing “digital library” services accessible to the general public through smart phone mobility. Social networking and global positioning tools can plot points of interests. This concept is like combining Geo-caching with history or culture.

Objective

Currently, cultural elements, community features and story lines are not gathered into a single public community source. This effort could help the general public become more aware of their past while developing a better understanding of their differences. It stands to reason that everything goes down better when there's a storyline that comes with it. Working with qualified adults, clients build a vested stakeholder interest as they create intelligent landmarks in their communities.

Byproduct:

Short term: Children are not only aware of the hazards that can occur through historic trends, but empowered to relate to others as they are vested into their topics and communities.

Long term: Cost associated to technology procurement and services are minimized. As various market solutions become transparent (open source media, web services), constituents adapt to avoid costs.

Mentoring youth in responsible media forums is specific to this focus. The preservation of culture and legacy are an essential component to a fundamental understanding of individual identity, quality of life and changes to the social environment. If implemented, this movement could be adopted globally and bring about a better appreciation for differences between cultures or values across a landscape. With the rate and proliferation of technology, this strategy is most likely practiced in select communities.
