Common names
Pink medlar (English); kalume-kakaonga (Bemba); kaonga, kabonga, kawonga (Kunda); chilya-munkwele, memena-mbuzi (Nyanja).
General description and distinguishing characteristics
A deciduous shrub, sometimes a small tree; bark pale brown with shallow vertical fissures. Flowers and fruit pink to crimson. Flowers in December, fruits from June to July.
Range and habitat
Valley riverine fringe woodland and thicket; Mixed alluvial thicket; Combretum thicket. Very common on sandy alluvium and on the edge of thickets.
