General description and distinguishing characteristics

A semi-deciduous small or medium-sized tree with a somewhat rounded crown. The bark is grey and with irregular cracks which give the bole a scaly appearance. The young leaves are mid-green but turn reddish-green before they are shed. The flowers are inconspicuous in both sexes and are borne on different trees in late winter and spring. The rounded yellowish green fruits ripen between June and October.
