This elegant gastropod is an excellent biological indicator of a stable, deep marine environment with a very soft, muddy seafloor. Its thin, lightweight, pear-shaped shell features a beautifully delicate network of fine intersecting ridges that closely resemble the texture of a modern fig shell. Living members of this family are specialized, active predators that crawl slowly over the mud in tropical and temperate seas to hunt for hidden sea urchins and bristle worms.
