This distinct subspecies represents an ancient, specialized lineage of the common cockle that adapted specifically to the shifting estuarine and coastal sandy bottoms of the regional Neogene basins. They possessed a highly muscular, hook-shaped foot that allowed them to actively hop across the seafloor to escape predatory starfish or rapidly re-burrow if a sudden current uncovered them. Living in shallow, near-shore tidal flat or lagoon environment heavily influenced by fluctuating nutrient levels.
